Hawaii energy consumption is down
It’s a really interesting report that the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism plans to put out monthly — how much oil we’re consuming.
According to the first edition of the report, transmitted Tuesday, Hawaii oil imports for the first six months of the year were down 15% from the same time last year.
With oil prices up 80% over the same time frame, so much decline in consumption is mostly a good thing.
I say “mostly” because a big chunk of the decline came from lower demand for jet fuel — Hawaii’s two oil refineries often make more jet fuel than gasoline — and this reflects the slump in airline activity here.
But the figures also reflects improving efficiency by the electric companies, and restraint in burning fuel on the part of us consumers.
Most other states don’t have the kind of detailed economic information that DBEDT crunches for us daily, weekly or monthly, and we benefit a lot from having access to the data.
