Wayne Cahill on Layoffs at the Honolulu Advertiser Print E-mail

Union leaders are fighting recent layoffs at the Honolulu Advertiser. Fifty-four employees were let go because of the slowing economy and the growing popularity of the Internet. The union hopes to meet with company leaders later today. Wayne Cahill, head of the Hawaii Newspaper Guild, joined us in studio this morning.

SolFocus Opens New Solar Power Facility in Kona Print E-mail

The solar energy start-up SolFocus held a Hawaiian blessing yesterday for its new facility next to Kona airport. SolFocus doesn't currently use polysilicon solar panels. Its panels focus sunlight onto a tiny amount of germanium. CEO Gary Conley, who appeared on Sunrise this morning, said the Kona facility will donate the power it makes.

With the price of gas creeping toward five dollars a gallon, buying a hybrid is becoming a trend. And while mainland companies are offering incentives to hybrid owners, one local insurance company is now offering Hawaii policy holders discounted rates.
