Na Maka o Ka Aina is not even a group in the traditional meaning of the word. It's two people doing the work of hundreds, documenting Hawaiian issues for over two decades. Everything from great Hawaiian leaders and sustainability issues to sovereignty and GMO debates.

The Origin of Puukohola Heiau in Kawaihae Print E-mail

 Today we visit a sacred Hawaiian site built more than 200 years ago. In 1810, Kamehameha I became the first and only chief to bring all Hawaiian islands under one rule. But this could not be done without the approval of the gods. A seer told Kamehameha I, "In order to rule all the Islands, you need to build a heiau to please your war god Kukailimoku."

Holua Sledding: An Ancient Hawaiian Past Time Print E-mail

 Keone Kalawe Junior and Senior love their work restoring heiau in Keauhou. But they are also perpetuating a truly Hawaiian past-time as well. Holua sledding is said to have been the sport enjoyed by the highest chiefs, the closest thing to surfing on land. Keone Kalawe has been researching the sport for nearly 15 years.

Keauhou is full of ancient Hawaiian sites including many heiau. Today we meet one part of a team making sure these heiau have new life. Every day Keone Kalawe is surrounded by our Hawaiian history. He can feel it guiding him.
