"The whole experience was terrifying," she said. Waltz said the driver of the Number 54 that goes between lower Pearl City and downtown wasn't just driving his route, he was playing a video game. "He was continuously playing his video game on the bus. Continuously," she said. "At times he was driving, playing with it. At times he was sitting there playing with it." "I was appalled," said Roger Morton, president of Oahu Transit Services. The company received Waltz's complaint and suspended the driver without pay pending an investigation. "Our information department referred the information to our central control group who dispatched one of our road supervisors to the scene to intercept the driver," he said. "He was a hazard," Waltz said. "He was playing his video game. He was speeding on the highway. He had his legs and feet up on the dashboard." The driver is an eighteen-year veteran with no complaints in his file for the last three years. That's as far back as Oahu Transit's records go. "It was a very petrifying moment. And when the bus did stop I kept on telling my son, 'Hurry! Get off the bus. Just get off the bus," Waltz said. She wants the driver fired. It could take the Oahu Transit Services days or weeks to complete its investigation. But it wants the public to know it's taking this case very seriously. |
