A Honolulu man with a sharp eye has discovered a new butterfly species just outside Waikiki. Jim Snyder first spotted the insects in March along Kapahulu Avenue. Scientists have determined it's the Zizina Otis, known as the "lesser grass blue" butterfly. The species is widely known through out Asia, Africa and the pacific but was never seen before in the islands. The insects appear to like Hawaii's abundant sleeping grass so their numbers are expected to grow statewide. Scientists said it doesn't seem to be harmful to the environment but they'll be watching for any negative consequences. |
