Hannemann Slams Kobayashi's Transit Plan Print E-mail

A day after Ann Kobayashi released her new transit plan, mayor Mufi Hannemann said she's misleading the public.

Mayor Hannemann believes Kobayashi hasn't done her homework on how much her rubber tire on concrete plan will cost.

Kobayashi's plan calls for a 3-lane elevated highway for carpoolers and buses. Her estimated cost is $2.5 billion.

Hannemann also questions her money source since he said there's no federal funding for her project plus the state general excise tax can't be used to build highways.

"You don't put together a plan that's going to spend three billion dollars in three weeks. I came from the biz world. I spoke the corporate CEOS this morning. You just don't do that," said Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

Hannemann also said Kobayashi will not be able to proceed with her project without an environmental impact study.

Kobayashi has said she can start right away.

Calls to her campaign were not returned Wednesday.
