Scarecrow Competition Brings Halloween Spirit Print E-mail

Back here at home, to get ready for the Halloween holiday, Ward Center and UH Manoa students teamed up to get shoppers into the spirit.

The first ever Scarecrow Design competition kicked off the shopping center's annual Harvest Festival on Saturday. Students from the school's product design and merchandising program were split up into teams and each team was assigned to a specific store. They had two hours to create a scarecrow, just using straw and items from their store.

"We made a pineapple for the head of our scarecrow which is made out of paper mache, and chicken wire and bunch of glitter and then we got an apron which is her best seller for our scarecrow outfit and then we made a gift basket incorporating all of her items," Stephanie Bednarek said.

The scarecrows will be up for the next two weeks and shoppers can go by the stores and vote for their favorite. The team with the most votes will win $3,000 in scholarship money.
