Monday, Gov. Linda Lingle announced an agreement between the state and Hawaiian Electric to move our state away from our dependence on fossil fuels. Under the Clean Energy Initiative, Hawaii would get 70 percent of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2030. Monday's deal accelerates regulatory changes needed to make that happen. A key component is building an undersea cable from Maui County to Oahu. That would allow 400 megawatts of wind power to be transferred, enough to light up a third of Oahu's homes. "Recent events in global markets show there are events out of our control," Lingle said. "We didn't cause them but they have an impact on us. One thing we have the power to do is to control our energy future." Sen. Daniel Inouye, a democrat, was also on hand for the announcement. He too, called this a critical deal that won't be easy to carry out, but one that's necessary for our energy future. |
