Before the sun rose Monday morning, a large protest began on Kamehameha Highway. More than 200 people showed up to fight for 30 people living in the valley. "I cried the other day but I have to stand strong. People have to look toward us as leaders to stand strong and that's what we're going to do right now," said one protestor. The state says residents don't have the proper permits to live in a state park. Eviction notices were put up last week. State legislator Colleen Meyer showed up at the protest Monday morning. According to Meyer, DLNR chair Laura Thielen says the families will not be evicted Monday. Instead, the state is trying to set up a meeting to negotiate some kind of settlement. |
