Researchers say it's not because of pollution development or habitat loss. It's mostly because of fishing. Six fishery scientists studied 89 sites throughout the main Hawaiian islands. They found the species disappearing most are those considered good eating such as Ulua, Uhu, and Redfish. The one researchers are very concerned about is the Uhu. The parrotfish is critical to maintaining the reefs and is considered enormously depleted. Around Oahu, the population is about 3% of what it is in more remote parts of the state. Scientists suggest stronger regulations and enforcement of gill net and scuba fishing rules to keep people from taking large amounts of the fish at once. |
