Public school locker searches won't be as random as originally planned. In a vote of 5 to 4, a Board of Education committee decided there must be some grounds for suspicion before officials can search students' lockers. The proposal is part of a sweeping new anti-drug program all public schools. The move was prompted by discovery of drugs, by a search dog, at three Maui schools. Random searches of cafeterias, gyms and bushes around school buildings will still be allowed. |
