Meanwhile, the president-elect will resign from his Illinois senate position this weekend. A Hawaii graduate could take his seat. President-elect Barack Obama is mostly out of sight in Chicago. He's hunkered down hours on end with his transition team. Mr. Obama only ventured out once Thursday for a meeting at the office of "Ebony" magazine. He's now resigned from his Senate seat, leaving the decision of who replaces him to Illinois' Democratic governor. Chicago congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is a possible replacement as is Tammy Duckworth, Illinois' director of Veterans Affairs. "If the call were to come for me to serve my country I would certainly respond," said Duckworth, a McKinley High School graduate. Vice President-elect Joe Biden has also been working here in Chicago choosing for his chief of staff, Ron Klain, a man who once had the same role under Vice President Al Gore. Mr. Biden and his wife were shown their new official residence at Washington's naval observatory by the Cheneys. During the campaign, Biden called Cheney the most dangerous vice president in U.S. History. That may have made for some interesting moments on the tour. At some point, Mr. Biden will also resign his Senate seat. His son Beau, Delaware's attorney general, is a possible successor. |
