The Treasury Department says it does not want to stigmatize companies for taking a handout or being turned down for one. But we do know some recipients of bailout handouts. Four megabanks are on the dole: Bank of America, Citigroup, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo. Bailout billions will also go to the investment houses of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. American Express is converting itself into a bank and city group applied Thursday for permission to do the same thing so they can grab some money from the treasury. More than 30 smaller banks have been told they'll get some money. Most have not been identified. But no Hawaii bank has announced an application and unless one of them harbors a secret, no Hawaii bank needs one. |
