Jayden Loughmiller may still be in Elemantary school, but this Hilo boy has got what it takes to get the crowd rocking. They call him "The Show," and he's been "the talk of the show" since he first stepped on stage at the tender age of three. He's a pint-sized drummer but the huge sound he makes brings the crowd to its feet. This is more than just a story about a talented kid, it's a tale of a father and son and the bonds that bind them. I flew to Hilo to check it out. "Hi. My name is Jayden. I'm in the 4th grade at Kaumana Elementary School and I am Hawaii's youngest professional drummer." Jayden was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 4. His father says, "He's very active, an extremely active child. So he was always jumping all over the place." And, in this case, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Dad had ADD too, but he also had a knack for music. Just ask Ms. Spencer, she had them both, as students at Kaumana Elementary. She says, "He's very much like his dad, his dad had the same talent and his dad was also a challenge." Sometimes it's hard for Jayden to focus in school, but when he's behind the drums, he's a natural. He started drumming at the age of three, before he could even reach the bottom half of the set. "I was on the top... my feet was dangling," he explains. But once he could reach, it was clear this kid had talent. "He could really alternate between the different hands, feet he could actually play the drum rolls and hold the groove," says his father Ace. Jayden has performed all over, including the Waikiki Shell. I asked him, what was that like? He said, "Like thousands of people cheering on. You're on the drum set and you're like aw man! It's so scary." He's a show stopper nonetheless, in September he wowed the crowd on stage with Ho'okoa, but he's also involved off stage. Jayden helped dad record instrument tracks for their hit song "Need Me." Dad says, "I'm proud as I can be as a father. He's a super hard worker, we always tease him that he's going to be a county worker or state worker or something." But that's not Jayden's plan. He says, "I want to be a producer just like my dad, take over and teach other people." Jayden is also always willing to lend a helping hand. Around the house, he paints, feeds the animals, and tends to his garden. In his free time, he's also an avid fisherman, and likes to play guitar, piano and ukulele. His teacher sums it up, "Jayden is a super kid definitely; to overcome his ADHD, his behaviors, and to do well. He's humble yet when he's performing he's such a professional." When it comes down to it, it's his personality that makes him a super special kid. He's always smiling, laughing, and... "He cares more about others than himself, and if he had a dollar and you needed the dollar he probably would give you his last dollar," says his teacher Noelani Spencer. So I asked him, "You would give someone your last dollar?" His reply? "Yes." His parents, Ace and Robynne, never want drumming to be something Jayden has to do. They hope he continues to have fun with it, and i even overheard the family talking about putting together a "Super Kid" group! Wouldn't that be great!? |
