Which of 4 Shipping Companies is Fastest? Print E-mail

KGMB9 mailed four identical boxes Thursday afternoon, Nov. 6, using four well-known companies: Fed-Ex, U.S. Postal Service, DHL and UPS.

At the U.S. Postal Service, we chose the best option for our time frame.

"If you go regular priority, it's going to be $16.80," said the sales clerk.

"How long will that take?" asked KGMB9's Tina Chau.

"2-4 business days," the clerk responded.

All four boxes were mailed using comparable shipping methods. We're guaranteed delivery by the end of the fourth business day. Here's what it cost.

Again, U.S Postal was $16.80. Fed-Ex charged $13.43. UPS was $15.50. DHL was twice as much as the others at $29.17.

We sent the boxes to San Francisco to Wendy Tokuda, TV anchor at our sister station there.

"I think there may be food in here," Tokuda smiled as she walked to her desk with the boxes.

The first box arrived the next day, even though we didn't pay for next day service.

"This one arrived first," said Tokuda, "second-day service, and this is DHL."

The others started to trickle in after that. U.S Postal Service the next business day, followed by UPS on Tuesday. Fed-Ex arrived Wedneday.

So it looks like you get what you pay for. The first to arrive was most expensive. The last was cheapest. Go figure.
