These are just some of the Punana Leo parents getting ready for tomorrow's makahiki celebration. What is makahiki? "For several months, perhaps three or four, there is a season of peace, time for celebration, and for preparing for the future." Traditionally, makahiki would be filled with song, dance, food, and many games including the stone-rolling game 'ulu maika. "Right now, the 'ulumaika are being carved. The parents are finishing their 'ulumaika to use during the festivals. This is the first year that Aha Punana Leo and the Punana Leo o Honolulu is coordinating this makahiki festival." The cultural group Ke Ala 'Olino Hawaii started this celebration in 2003. "It was always the vision to pass this and continue this but pass this onto our Native Hawaiian organization that can continue our tradition and perpetuate our culture." "To all you, come down and join us and be ready to play some Hawaiian games, to learn some of the Hawaiian culture, through chants, songs, and the sort." The Makahiki Maoli Festival starts tomorrow morning at 10 and runs until 5 in the evening. It's sure to be a joyous celebration. |
