"Go out, exercise. The water is warm. The waves are nice," said surfer Joey Williams. "As long as the water is clear, it's safe. There's no threat anyway like I was telling you. If the water is brown, sharks come around and stuff." A lot of planning went into a surprise baby shower in Maili so the organizers weren't about to let the rain dampen their spirits. "Nope, cause we got a baby girl coming on its way in December so we're having a big shower for her right now," said Francine Paaluhi of Nanakuli. But some of the 150 guests called to make sure the celebration wasn't canceled. "We heard about the weather on Thursday. We were kind of skeptical and praying that the weather would subside but it didn't so we're making do with what we have right now and we're still continuing the party," said Paaluhi. Nearby, another family spent the morning setting up tents and tarps. The gloomy weather offered a somber backdrop as they prepared to scatter the ashes of a loved one. "We were worried about it to see if we could spread his ashes out today," said Pomaikai Kahananui. "My sister decided to just go ahead with it - rain and all." |
