Fewer visitors are coming to the islands but one company is hoping to change that with a new tour to entice tourists and it's all focused on our next president.
Places like Rainbow Drive In, Paki Park and Zippy's are pretty standard for locals. Starting next week they'll be tour stops all because they are Barack Obama's old stomping grounds.
Obama knows he wears slippers not flip flops. And it's shave ice not a snow cone. And he certainly knows what keiki means.
"How about everybody gets the keiki size is that alright? It's like the small size," Obama told the kids in Island Snow as he ordered them shave ice.
"But I'm 10 daddy," was the response.
"Well you guys still have to eat dinner."
Now Guides of Oahu is capitalizing on his popularity by pointing out his past. They’re showing people to the hospital where he was born, the places he lived and where he got his first job, which is a Baskin Robbins on South King Street. It’s a spot Mitch Berger happened to mention on another tour.
"People would look. I'd see the heads turning and cameras clicking and these were people signed up to go on a rain forest tour," said Mitch Berger, Obama Tour Hawaii.
That's when he knew he had to scoop up the idea for the Obama tour and tell little tidbits of Obama tales.
"Pu'u'ualakaa means rolling sweet potato and our tour is filled with stories, one of his favorite deserts was sweet potato pie. So this location has significance, this is a place where gramps and toot used to bring him for family outings," said Berger, from the Pu'u'ualakaa State Park lookout.
Rob Kay is also working on Obama's roots. He launched ObamasNeighborhood.com which has the Barack's birth announcement and the spot where as a boy Obama reportedly carved his name in wet concrete at Punahou. He got all the info researching for the Wall Street Journal and figured he'd put it online.
"I thought what an opportunity to educate people. In other words I thought there was a big gap as to how Hawaii fit into Obama's life," said Kay.
As Obama's popularity grows so too should all his old sights and his new sites.
The Obama tour is two and a half hours and will cost $40. For more information on Obama Tour Hawaii click here.

The Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau has included an entire section on Obama's early days in Hawaii on its website. |
