Even after years of decline, we get more than 300,000 visitors a year from Japan, and another 50,000 from Canada. Only Australia sends anywhere near the number of visitors we get from Canada, Britain and China send half as many. Some years we get more visitors from Europe as from Canada. Apart from the UK the biggest source of European visitors is Germany. Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China collectively sent us 17,000 visitors last year, while Korea alone sent 10,000, and that was before the visa waiver. Australia and New Zealand together send as many visitors as Canada does. Latin America sends another 5,000; half from Mexico, the rest mainly from Brazil and Argentina. Here's how the arithmetic works. It would take a 50% increase in visitors from all these other places to make up for this year's decline in visitors from Japan. But even a small increase would mean more first-time visitors, with salutary effects because so many who come once, will visit again. |
