Big Dinners mean Big Boost for Plumbers Print E-mail

Shoppers weren't the only ones scrambling around today. The day after Thanksgiving is also the busiest day of the year for plumbers.

Busting through bad pipes isn't always fun but it does make money and on Black Friday, plumbers are seeing a load of new business.

On a typical day a Roto-Rooter plumber will go to 3 to 4 jobs. Today they'll take on as many as seven jobs. Some jobs are easy. Others are not.

"Water was leaking coming down from the faucet and it was dripping down on the bottom," said Daniel Heath, Roto-Rooter Plumber, standing in the kitchen of a client in Lanikai.

The day after thanksgiving is by far the busiest day of the year.

"Well I wasn't aware of that but I know we had problems two or three years ago and had to call a plumber the day after thanksgiving," said Carolyn Yamaoka, customer with a leaky faucet.

"Basically they're putting things that should be put in the trash can down the garbage disposal," said Heath.

Black Friday has a different meaning to plumbers. On Oahu today alone they'll make $15,000 more than any other day of the year.

"Especially now in a down economy, the job count is down, revenue is down so every bit counts," said Isaac Wise, Roto-Rooter General Manager.

"It feels good when you get the line cleared," said Heath after fixing the problem.

Often time's people have more guests over to the house for Thanksgiving which adds more traffic to other areas of the house, namely the bathroom, which can cause some problematic backups. We'll spare you the details from those types of jobs.

"My dad was a plumber and I didn't really want to be touching the things he was touching but it helps pay the bills," admits Heath.

So you know, the second busiest plumbing day of the year is the day after Christmas.

"Be aware with what's going on with your plumbing. I'd like for you to clog your drains but saving money is the key thing," said Wise. "I hope you don't have to see me, or my guys but I'd sure like to see you."

The plumbers say carrots and potato peels cause the most amount of problems in kitchen sinks so try to throw them in the garbage instead.
