Hawaiian Electric Company signed an agreement with a company called Better Place. It develops power sources where electric cars juice up, sort of like gas stations for our cars. Better Place plans to develop a network of charge spots around the state; 50,000 to 100,000 places where people with electric cars can plug in and charge their batteries. The second part of our infrastructure is a chain of battery switch stations so that you can drive," said Shai Agassi, Better Place CEO, "and instead of waiting for your battery to charge you can actually replace the battery and continue to go. Better Place estimates it'll spend close to one billion dollars building it's electric car infrastructure in Hawaii. If all goes as planned, the network will be operational and electric cars will be mass produced by late 2011 or early 2012. |
