"Tthey usually come into places where people are parked at night, home," said Better Place CEO Shai Agassi at a news conference at the governor's office. "Where people park during the day -- work place, downtown streets or retail locations." Better Place has signed a deal with Hawaiian Electric, which would provide the electricity from renewable energy sources like the sun, waves and wind. No oil. "It's not 'I want to buy electricity'," said Gov. Linda Lingle, "It's 'I want to buy electricity that's produced by renewable and indigenous sources of energy.' " One of the challenges with those windfarms is what do you do with the power in the middle of the night, when the extra 400 megawatts on our system is probably going to be a challenge for us, unless we power our cars with it, " said Hawaiian Electric's Sr. VP. The electric cars would even become a source of power, capable of giving back energy, in case of emergencies. Better Place is not an auto-maker, but it believes if it builds the charging network, auto dealers will start selling electric cars. The mission is to kick Hawaii's addiction to oil by getting rid of one gas-powered car at a time. "The opportunities that hawaii have with electric cars.. we're talking about win win win win win," said Alm, "the only loser in the whole equation is oil...and that's ok." Related Stories:
