The Big Island Police Commission wrapped up its meeting just before 10 on Wednesday night. Commissioners interviewed Kubojiri and former Chief Chadwick Fukui for the job. Kubojiri won unanimously with 7 votes. One tricky issue he'll face is what to do about marijuana. In the last election, a majority of voters decided to make personal pot possession the lowest priority for law enforcement. Outgoing chief Lawrence Mahuna refused to comply, saying marijuana is still illegal and a danger. The biggest effect of the november vote is that the department will not getting any new funding for eradication. |
