"This particular offender stood out from the very beginning as being an individual who was an immense danger to the community," said prosecutor Rom Trader. An immense danger because Michael Stephens was already a convicted sexual predator. Rom Trader was the prosecutor who convicted him for kidnapping and molesting another boy just years before -- a 16-year-old. In that case, Stephens only got five years probation because the family did not want to subject their child to a trial. But years after Stephens pretended to have committed suicide, someone reported seeing him driving in Manoa. Then law enforcement officials found that Stephens had applied for a US passport. In April 2008, he was featured on America's Most Wanted, and in October, the show got a tip that Stephens owned a business in Mexico. Turns out, the former Hawaii real estate agent was selling condo time shares in Puerto Vallarta. US Marshals announced Wednesday, he was nabbed down the coast in Zihuatanejo. "Someone like that, has heaped countless amounts of grief, abuse and harm upon those people that he's preyed upon," Trader said. "We're hoping today will bring us one step closer to putting him where he needs to be, which is off the streets, away from children." Stephens will be sent to Houston to await extradition to Hawaii. |
