The bill calls for the governor to look at several issues like marine life, cultural resources and traffic. Hawaii Superferry must agree to all of her conditions before it can set sail again. The meeting in the governor's office started at 3 p.m. Thursday and it's scheduled to last for four hours. About 20 people are there. They include agriculture and transportation officials as well as some of the people involved in the Maui lawsuit. Opponents are still concerned about issues like the ferry's speed and possible pollution. But they are encouraged by the face-to-face meeting with the governor. "I see now this is a time that we can sit around a table and discuss some of these real issues and find some resolution," said Greg Kaufman, Pacific Whale Foundation. "We're really giving everybody a chance to come in and let us know in fact what they feel the issues are, but if someone wants to come and argue whether Superferry is good or not or the bill is good or not - that's not the purpose of the meeting," said Gov. Linda Lingle. Lingle plans to issue an executive order on Monday to adopt the new conditions. Then, it's back to court to ask Maui Judge Jospeh Cardoza to lift the injunction. The governor plans to meet with representatives from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs on Friday. |
