Dog the Bounty Hunter Speaks Out Print E-mail

Dog, the bounty hunter, broke down on national television Tuesday, apologizing for his use of the "n-word" and talking about his path to redemption.

It's been a rough week for the bounty hunter. On Tuesday, he said this has been one of the toughest lessons he's ever had to learn. And he is promising never to use the "n-word" again.

Dog Chapman hung his head as he listened to his own racial remarks on network television.

"I feel really terrible that's uh is a terrible thing I said it hurts terrible to hear it over and over I am really sorry I said that," said Chapman.

Chapman is heard calling his son's girlfriend the "n-word" in a secretly recorded phone call that ended up on the National Enquirer's Web site.

Chapman admits he does use the word occasionally but said he never means any disrespect.

"I thought that I was cool enough in the black world to use that word as a brother to a brother I am not," Chapman said.

Chapman spoke for an hour. At one point, he listened to an interview with Monique Shinnery, the target of his comments.

It brought him to tears.

"Ive never been any trouble so I don't get you judging my character you have never met me. I have never met her she's a cute girl. I didn't know never knew what she looked like," Chapman said.

It's not enough for Shinnery's family. In a written statement last week, Dog said he made the remark not because of his son's girlfriend's race, but because of her character.

"That I found very offensive. Not just to her. But to me and my family," said Linda Shinnery.

The mother of the 21-year-old Kapolei woman told KGMB9 she believes he is a closet racist.

And his public apology means nothing until he said he is sorry to her daughter.

"To me a person who is genuinely sorry who don't feel they can apologize themselves is not sorry," Shinnery said.

Chapman said the tape was made eight months ago. He believes his son Tucker gave it to the National Enquirer because he needed the money maybe for drugs. And he's going to do everything he can to change America's view of him.
