"Foul Play" Suspected in Bird Case Print E-mail

A Honolulu man is trying to solve the mystery of his missing mccaw.

Bruce McGonigal has had his bird Marley for ten years and told KGMB9 she would never fly the coop. He suspects she was abducted by a bird bandit.

"This one is called Skipper," said McGonigal, referencing a bird he describes a Double Yellow Headed Amazon.

"Hello," McGonigal said to Skipper. It answered, "Hello."

Yes, McGonigal talks to his birds, and some talk back. But they can not answer his most pressing question, "Where's Marley?"

Marley is part of McGonigal's family of about 100 birds. She was part of his treasured traveling bird business. They pose for pictures with tourists. They pose with celebrities. And they perform at kid's birthday parties.

"Her favorite deal is being cradled ... and the smaller the kid the better. Little kids. Three years old is my prime customer. They'd just hold that bird. So cute," he told KGMB9.

Two weeks ago, Nov. 7, Marley disappeared from her perch atop McGonigal's garage overlooking Palama.

"That's when I was out here saying good night to them checking them all out. And then the next morning on the 8th I'm coming down to feed them at six O'clock in the morning, which is a routine thing, and no Marley," McGonigal said.

McGonigal said Marley would not just fly away. He is sure this is a case of "foul play."

"Somebody taking it. Yea. Jumping up on the roof, avoiding the dog and grabbing the bird," McGonigal said.

When asked why someone would do that he said, "for a fast couple hundred bucks probably."

McGonigal thinks Marley should be pretty easy to spot. Not only is she big and bright, but like most of his birds, Marley is wearing a metal ID band around one of its legs. The word's "Bird Guy" are stamped on the ID band.

McGonigal is asking anyone with any information about Marley to call police. They can also call him. He is listed in new phone books under "Bird Guy."
