A new eruption at the Kilauea lava flow has prompted a warning. Scientists said anybody left in the nearby Royal Gardens subdivision needs to stay updated over the next few days. The latest flyover Wednesday morning shows a new outbreak of lava near the source of the original eruption back in July. The new flow caused the lava to recede in some spots, exposing the giant channel seen here. In other areas, the Pahoehoe lava is moving quickly. Scientists watched this flow near the Pu'uo'o crater travel about one kilometer within four hours Wednesday morning. That flow is moving southeast toward the Royal Gardens neighborhood, which is mostly abandoned except for a few transient campers. "I think there's only one permanent resident in Royal Gardens. Royal Gardens is the subdivision that's been cut off by Pu'u O'o and Kapayna lavas for many many years," said Jim Kauahikaua, volcanologist. Because there are no roads leading into Royal Gardens, Civil Defense crews plan to fly over the area Thursdat to warn whoever's there. |
