"There was an iPod, it looked like some clothes, bag, stuff like that," said Miller. "Woman's stuff?" asked KGMB9's Tina Chau. "Yeah," Miller said. Police don't know how long man was in the Hale Lokelani dorm, but at around 8:30 Sunday morning, a student in her room heard someone jiggling the door knob trying to get in. She looked through the peephole, didn't recognize the man, so she alerted authorities. "At that point, she did the right thing," said Capt. Frank Fujii of the Honolulu Police Department. "She went downstairs, made a report. While she was downstairs reporting it to the university officials, the male was observed by a witness attempting to get into the room a second time. That male witness apprehended him until police got there. It was just a few months ago when campus authorities were warning students about a man who broke into a dorm and sexually assaulted a student. A recent KGMB9 investigation showed how easy it was for a stranger to get into the dorms. After our story aired, university officials vowed to beef up security. They are investigating how the suspect in Sunday's incident got passed security and made it up to the 4th floor. They did say someone was at the front desk around the clock. Despite a potential flaw in the system, there was a silver lining. "We're very please to report the resident in this case had her door lock and promptly reported the presence of a stranger," said UH spokesperson Gregg Takayama. "She did everything we've asked the residents to do." As of Sunday night, the 20 year old has not been charged. He did tell police he's part of a troop unit out of Schofield Barracks.
