HPD Wants to Recruit Women Print E-mail

"I'm five foot four. I won't tell you how much I weigh...but I am five foot four," said Capt. Moana Hew to a classroom full of women.

Capt. Hew said it doesn't matter how big you are, if you are a badge-wearing woman holding a gun.

"This is the first time we have done a specific recruitment for women," said Capt. Hew.

About 75 women showed up to the Waipahu Training Academy Saturday to decide if they're tough enough to become one of Honolulu's finest.

"Try grappling with someone for five minutes. You guys see the UFC fights? We do that on any given day," said a HPD physical trainer to a group of women.

Its safe to say becoming a woman in blue is not for the faint-hearted.

"The job is a hard job so the training is hard. It's para-military and male dominated," Capt. Hew said.

Women make up only 11 percent of the Honolulu Police Department so female officers, in all stages of thier career, gave a pitch for public service.

"But I tell you this, it is the most rewarding field you can be in," said an officer to the class.

"I kinda like what I see so far," said Melissa Pascau, who is checking out the career possibility.

Capt. Hew said the goal is to convince potential recruits that the department doesn't necessarily need manly strength, but a bigger helping of women's intuition.

"Being able to tell whether they are going to fight me or they are going to run," Capt. Hew said.

If Pascau takes the plunge, it will start with a written exam and then physical training.

"I think its going to be pretty hard core," she said.

But Captain Hew has a pitch you can't argue with .

"It's a great job. You get to help people," Capt. Hew said. "More so than sitting in a factory and making widgets all day."

If that didn't pitch didn't convince you a starting police officer makes $43,000 a year.
