A line of volunteers carried in boxes of new toys at the Salvation Army Toys for Tots warehouse in Iwilei. Two days ago the charity was about 3,000 toys short of its goal and put out a plea for help. Then donations starting rolling in by the truckload, thanks to businesses, community groups and individual donors. "It was an amazing adventure," said Kim Giest, a Salvation Army Manager. "(Thursday) we received about 4,200 toys. (Friday), we received 1,200 toys in two incredible generous donations this afternoon. We're going to be able to not only meet our goal but exceed it and service more children." Those donations should bring in about 3,000 extra toys, for a grand total of about 8,500 toys in the last two days. All together, the Toys for Tots program will be helping about 17,000 needy children on Oahu this week. The toys will be delivered over the weekend. |
