Although it's one of the newer parks Mayor Hannemann said the Nani Kai section of Ulehawa Beach Park is a mess. The city said it has received a lot of requests from homeowners to clean up the area. The mayor said it's not going to be an easy task but believes it will all be worth the effort. As the waves lap up on the shore and you look out to the ocean there is beauty as far as the eye can see at the Nani Kai section of Ulehawa Beach Park. But look back to the land and there is what some consider an eyesore. Homeless camps have taken over the area. Now the city isn't going to look away any longer. "As you know we have a large segment of our, community that inhabits the beach area and park areas and feel that it is their right to be there so we continue to wrestle through that," said City and County of Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. The mayor announced he is cleaning up the beach park, which is actually one of the newer parks in the area. But it's been getting worse. The restroom needs repair, a urinal has been broken and was replaced literally with a plastic juice jug. The park as a whole is not very inviting so the city wants to clean, repair and paint over it all. "We're going to be able to clean up that beach park and give it back to the community," said Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Dana Takahara-Dias. It's the same park where Marlene Anduha was just charged with running a drug and stolen goods business out of her tent. With the city's announcement all the homeless people at the park will be given 45 days to leave. So where will they go? "To another beach most likely or find someplace to go to," said Teresa Pahinui, who has a camp nearby. Many won't go to a shelter because it won't accept pets. "Why go to the shelter if we can't take our animals, because the animals are like our children," Pahinui said. The city already cleaned up Ma'ili Beach Park earlier this year. So far the homeless haven't returned. Now it hopes the same thing will happen at Nani Kai, where the scenery is the only thing left behind. The clean up is expected to start in February. As for places where the homeless can go? The state said all its homeless shelters are full and the shelter in Waianae has been full to capacity for the past four months and has a waiting list to get in. |
