Can you believe it? The Warriors are headed to the Sugar Bowl. And it's that un-blemished 12-0 record that got them there. The Warriors started off ranked 23rd in the country. And they climbed the polls week in and week out to finish the year at their highest point ever at number 10. June Jones: Building the Warriors But first, to really appreciate what the 2007 Warrior team has done, you have to recognize what was built. National prominence did not come to Manoa over one season. Head coach June Jones brought the Warriors full circle in less than a decade from 0-12 to 12-0. Recaping the Perfect Season: Part 1 Just as coach Jones and his Warriors progressed through the years, they got stronger with each game in 2007. It wasn't long before they faced their first real test. UH hit the road for 2 of its first 3 matchups. It turned out to be the longest trip taken in the June Jones era. And to make matters worse Colt Brennan suffered the first real injury of his college career. Recaping the Perfect Season: Part 2 For the first time as head coach in Hawaii, June Jones lead the Warriors to a 3-0 start. But now Colt Brennan was on the sidelines nursing his ankle. Adjustments needed to be made. Someone needed to step up. Luckily Tyler Graunke was ready. Recaping the Perfect Season: Part 3 The next set of games came with storied pasts and it all started at the position of head coach. Before June Jones, San Jose State's Dick Tomey was UH's winningest coach. Jones admits he and New Mexico State's Hal Mumme have been borrowing offensive plays from each other for nearly 20 years. And Fresno State's Pat Hill and Jones currently have the longest running rivalry in the WAC dating back to 1999. Recaping the Perfect Season: Part 4 With 3 games left things were coming together. The BCS chatter was getting louder. But after winning the first 9 games by an average of 29 points. The Warriors were in for much tighter contests the rest of the way. A WAC Championship and an invitation to the Bowl Championship Series hung in the balance. And all three games were on national tv. Warrior Fans and Aloha Colt If you made it to any of the games you saw them… They were everywhere. So we now showcase the clever and creative moments of 2007. He shattered records, captured the spotlight and led his team to unprecedented success. But to Colt Brennan, the team was always first. We pay tribute to the most storied quarterback in UH history. Brian Kajiyama: Toughness & Determination In all, June Jones and his assistants have more than three centuries of coaching experience and every single one of them has played the game except grad assistant Brian Kajiyama. As unbelievable as this sounds, he actually went from being a visitor at practice to a full time staff member. It was Brian's love for the game that spoke volumes for his resume. Aloha Seniors Every great team has that special group of players. The guys who's hands never shake. Who stare at you with intensity and expectation forcing you to push and perform at your very peak. Ferocious, yes, but with a soothing calm even in the toughest situation. These are the veterans, the enforcers, the leaders. Tonight we say aloha to the Warrior seniors. Final Thoughts When June Jones first arrived at Hawaii in 1999, he left a banner in the tunnel at Aloha Stadium for his team to see on their way out to the field. One of the words on that banner that stood out then as it does now is 'believe.' Hawaii has now positioned itself on the college football map. Being perfect in paradise is as good as it gets. But wouldn't it be sweet to add a Sugar Bowl title with a win over Georgia? Our thanks and congratulations go to coach June Jones and his Warriors. While there may never be a season like this again, hopefully we never stop believing. |
