Maui is still recovering after a major storm hit the island in early December. A month later, the Superferry is helping the National Guard clean up the mess. On Sunday at 3 p.m., the Superferry was loaded up with large military construction equipment all to be used to clean up stream beds in Kula. Bob cats, bull dozers, excavators and dump trucks will be brought to Maui along with 20 volunteer members of the National Guard. The group will be cleaning up a six mile radius of Kula. In particular, stream beds, which are still filled with rocks and debris after a major storm hit the island Dec. 5. "We just really feel for the residents of Maui," said Terry O'Halloran, of the Superferry. "That was a real devastating flood they had and we are very happy to be assisting the National Guard and the people on Maui so they can get this equipment over there and get that area cleaned up." The National Guard said without the Supeferry it would have had to book a barge to get the equipment over to Maui and then separately fly over the clean-up crew. It said the Superferry is quicker and more cost effective. The boat was loaded up Sunday but it will be taking off for Maui Monday at 6:30 a.m. The National Guard said it will be in Maui cleaning up until the end of the month. |
