The alleged victim is a 13-year-old girl. Darin Yoshinaka used to help coach the girls volleyball team at the private school. The student told police the alleged assaults happened on Nov. 3 and Jan. 2. Yoshinaka, 28, turned himself in to police on Saturday. He is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault and five counts of third-degree sexual assault. Yoshinaka's attorney declined to comment on the specific charges since he had not seen the police reports but said his client had been cooperating with authorities. "Darin has never been involved with the law before. He comes from a very respected and private local family. We're asking everyone to respect the family's privacy and to keep an open mind and to allow the criminal justice system to work," said Yoshinaka's attorney, David Hayakawa. Yoshinaka was not a member of the school's faculty and he does not coach at Maryknoll anymore. Yoshinaka posted $50,000 bail and was released from jail just before 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. His initial appearance is set for Wednesday at District Court. |
