Honolulu Mayor: The Debate
Wanted Wednesday: Jon Caravalho Print E-mail

February 1, 2006. Around two in the afternoon, a group of visitors from Japan are waiting at a bus stop near the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. Honolulu Police say 45-year-old Jon Caravalho targeted them and set his sights on a fanny pack worn by a 20-year-old woman.

Police say that's when another man and the woman's 46-year-old mother intervene. Caravalho then goes for her purse.

"He turns his attention to the mom and struggles with her,"  said Sgt. Kim Buffett of Honolulu Crimestoppers. "Her bag, she had worn over her shoulder, they struggle, the strap breaks and he starts running."

Police say two service members witnessed the crime and chased down Caravalho, recovered the woman's purse, and held him for authorities. Caravalho was arrested for the crime but police say he failed to show for court and remains on the run.

"He also has an alias, Derek. So he goes by Derek Caravalho and Jon Caravalho," said Buffett.

Caravalho is described as a 45-year-old Caucasian man, 5'11" tall, weighing 154 pounds. His hair is graying. His eyes are brown and he may or may not still have a mustache. Police say he's no stranger to criminal activity.

Buffett said, "He has 13 convictions resulting from robberies and forgeries. He has several cases of forgeries, and of course some traffic offenses that lead to the 13."

Police say Caravalho is known to frequent the Pearl Harbor area as well the Leeward and Windward Coasts.

Tips that lead to Caravalho's arrest, could put up to a thousand bucks in your pocket. If you have any information, call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
