A memorial of flowers, stuffed animals and hand written notes grew throughout the day Friday as people paid their respects to Cyrus Belt, a 1-year-old boy killed when a neighbor allegedly threw him from a freeway overpass Thursday morning. "He was a loving boy. He was my nephew and I love him with all my heart and he was killed in a violent death. We're upset about it," said Ronald Asiata, Belt's uncle. Asiata had the unpleasant task of identifying the body at the medical examiner's office Friday. The child's mother, Nancy Asiata, did not learn about her son's death until Thursday night and was too grief stricken to identify the body herself. Countless people feel her pain. KGMB9 talked to a man who knelt on the overpass while saying a prayer for Belt. He does not know the victim's family, but said he just would not feel at ease until he paid his respects. "Everybody should enjoy their life. I want to go to Ala Moana to play tennis, but without any praying for him, I can not play," said Hawaii Kai resident Kunio Honda. "People of Hawaii really are warm. This kind of stuff doesn't happen in Hawaii, but it does, yea. So sad to see it happen to a child, an innocent child. Really is heart wrenching," added Kailua resident Earnest Kahanaoi. Kahanaoi took time out of his work day to bring lei to the overpass even though he had never met young Cyrus Belt or his family. "This is a sad situation yesterday what happened. I have a two year old. I have two of them. I kind of felt break my heart what happened yesterday. Was real shocking to the islands too, yea," Kahanaoi added. Nancy Asiata spent the day away from her apartment, an uncomfortable place since Matthew Higa, 23, the man suspected of killing her baby boy lived just upstairs. Uncle Ron Asiata had trouble expressing his feelings about Higa. "I don't know," Asiata said looking up at Higa's apartment. "I don't know. I'm sorry. I've got to go," Asiata said.
