Hundreds took part in a celebration that included a parade through Waikiki. The event also honored the UH women's soccer and volleyball teams which both won 2007 WAC championships. "Everyone's been so supportive. It's unbelievable. It isn't like this other places, and it's pretty special," said Warrior head coach Greg McMackin. "We're very excited. We've never been in a parade before so it's kind of special and it's nice that the mayor and the state of Hawaii let us do this and for the people of Hawaii, especially," said Jessica Domingo, captain of the UH women's soccer team. Several Oahu high school and intermediate football champions were also recognized for their achievements. They marched in the parade which featured floats, trolleys and several marching bands. "I felt good about it cause even at the JV level we can get recognized from everyone and my players felt really good, too," said Waianae football player Eleu Wilson. After the parade the festivities continued at Queen's Surf Beach. Fans watched highlights from the Warrior football team's spectacular season on a 30-foot screen. "It's a way not just to basically say mahalo to the respective teams for their accomplishments, but I think it shows all of us what's possible when you work hard, work together as a team, you can achieve your dreams," said Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannemann. "I think we gotta come together ohana, family, and it's about time we share this aloha, not only with our young people, but with all the people of Hawaii," said entertainer Danny Kaleikini. |
