"I am proposing that we buy the 850-acre Turtle Bay property on Oahu's North Shore," said Lingle. A bombshell proposal and an expensive proposition. But one the governor calls a once in a generation chance to preserve an important part of Hawaii. "I expect there will be more than a few people, including some legislators who will question my proposal to acquire these lands at the same time we face so many other needs," Lingle said. Lingle estimates it will cost less than $500,000, but believes keeping the prime beachfront property in public hands is the right thing to do. "Our state's ultimate success rests in the collective hands of our people," Lingle said. She also said it's vital that we shift our economy from land development to innovation and technology. She wants to start creative academies which would focus on animation, digital media and game development. The governor also talked tax relief, "And we are asking the legislature to pass tax deductions of up to $20,000 a year for parents or other family members saving for a child's education." And lastly, Lingle emphasized energy independece as a goal she'll pursue with great intensity. Reducing Hawaii's dependence on oil to renewable energy, such as solar power and our natural sources. "Today Hawaii is the most oil dependent state in America and this has to change," Lingle said. Regarding Turle Bay, the governor admits she didn't contact the owners of the property before she unveiled her proposal. The owners said they were caught completely off guard. |
