And their indictment Tuesday is the first of its kind in Hawaii history. Saturnino Palting and Nelson Domingo are charged with felony animal cruelty for the death of Caddy. The eight-month-old puppy was stolen last month from the Moanalua Golf Course while his owner was playing a round of golf. The two suspects are former workers there and the first to be charged under the state's heightened animal cruelty offense, which became law last summer. Prosecutors asked for no bail saying both are at risk of leaving the state. "The suspect Palting is an alien from the Philippines and is therefore a flight risk. However we have no evidence of prior record. As for respect for suspect Domingo, he is also from the Philippines and is also a flight risk, but has no record that we are aware of," said the prosecutor. As of Tuesday afternoon, the men had not turned themselves in. If convicted, they could face five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. |
