Lingle Signs Unprecedented Deal With Feds Print E-mail

The state has signed what it's calling an unprecedented deal with the U.S. Department of Energy to kick our dependence on oil and there's no shortage of reasons why it's important.

Ninety percent of our energy is from imported oil. Hawaii has the highest gas prices in the nation at $3.50 a gallon. We have the highest electricity rates. And Hawaii is the most oil dependent state in America.

Undesirable statistics the governor is trying to change.

"We simply have to take the giant strides that enable us to make significant progress. Today is one of those giant strides," said Gov. Linda Lingle.

With a crowd more that 60 people strong looking on Lingle signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy.

"This is the beginning of an important solution to that problem and that is to reduce our dependence on imported sources of energy," Lingle said.

By the year 2030, Hawaii would get 70 percent of it's energy using renewable sources.

Such as solar, wind, geothermal and wave power. They are natural resources Hawaii has an abundance of.

"It only makes sense that we focus here first on getting things right for the nation and learning what we can do," said Alexander Karsner, Assitanst Secretary for Energy Efficiency.

The assistant secretary said the federal government will help Hawaii with funding, research, access to technology and more.

"It is to take that warehouse of national knowledge, focus more intensely and more frequently with this state on an unprecedented level compared to anything we have engaged with any state before," said Karsner. "Collaborative effort to power a majority of our homes and our cars using renewable energy, the wave of the future."
