"We have some dishes that are our staples like spare ribs and pot roast pork and beef broccoli," said Patti Louie. Louie's father Calvin Chun named the restaurant after her. "Everybody in Chinatown thought he was nuts," said Louie's sister Cathy Chun. "They said, 'You're crazy! Fast food Chinese.' They said, 'You'll never make it.'" Chun didn't listen. He opened Patti's in Ala Moana Center in 1967. "The Princess plate used to be 95 cents," Cathy Chun said. In forty years prices changed but not much else. "So we have the Princess, Prince and King Plate. I don't know how my dad came up with that but it seems to have stuck. So people remember that," Louie said. As word's gotten out about Patti's closing at the end of January, lines have gotten longer. "The beef broccoli. I like the beef broccoli," said Bill Kato. "We had to come and get the Kau Yuk for our granddaughter," said Cookie Lukela. "The one thing is the famous almond cookie," said Tom Yundt. Almost 50 items have made Patti's popular. Now it's closer to last call. Louie said she'll focus on their Pearlridge restaurant. But the memories are at Ala Moana. "Many years ago i personally served Gene Hackman and I've served Roger Ebert," Louie said. A lot of people can't believe the end of the month is the end of the line. "I guess it's hard not to be sad," Louie said. |
