If an umpire does a good job calling a baseball game, he probably goes unnoticed. If a referee has done a good job officiating a football game, he
too has probably not called attention to himself during the course of the
game.

A good journalist is often like a good referee or umpire. A reporter is most effective when he or she allows the viewer to focus on the content of a
news story rather than distracting the viewer by garnering any of the spotlight.

Therefore writing a bio about oneself is an unusual, if not uncomfortable task, for a journalist. But in an attempt to shed some light on who I am ... I offer the following mini-biography.

I've been proud to call Hawaii home for almost 30 years. I am a University of Hawaii graduate with 20 years of experience working in the local broadcast industry.

I confesses I first became interested in Journalism as a way to get into sporting events without having to purchase a ticket. Sports reporters often enjoy front row seats. It's the perk that lured me into a career in broadcasting. I began covering sports, and while athletics is still my passion, I now cover hard news on a regular basis.

I've been fortunate enough to cover the biggest news and sports stories in Hawaii since first joining KGMB9 in 1987.

Career highlights include working as the play-by-play man for University of Hawaii sports on both radio and television, doing national reports as lava from Kilauea Volcano devoured the town of Kalapana, and traveling to Rapa Nui in preparation for the arrival of the Polynesian voyaging Canoe Hokulea.

My passion is calling play-by-play, whether it be basketball, football, volleyball, or baseball. But nothing gets my blood flowing like a big breaking news story. The challenge of piecing together an accurate, compelling, and visually interesting news story still gives me a jolt ... even after all these years and literally thousands of stories.

The best part of working as a general assignment reporter in Hawaii is getting to meet new people every day. Hawaii residents are as diverse as the islands themselves. There are fascinating people to meet with almost every assignment.

When not working, you'll find me hiking, biking, kayaking, playing golf, or engaging in some other physical activity under our blue island skies.

I have traveled extensively and lived in several places around the world, but Hawaii will always be my home.

Brooks Baehr is a general assignment reporter for KGMB9 News. He has been with KGMB9 since 2001.
