The Big Island is getting the worst of the severe weather. Continuous rains and satuarated grounds have created dangerous situations from Hilo, to Puna, to the Kau Districts. Mayor Harry Kim has called for an evacuation in the upper Hilo area. Those who need to seek safe shelter from flooding are being told to go to Hilo Civic Auditorium. At the Hilo Farmer's Market Saturday, vendors were trying to do business but had to give up by mid-morning. The rain has been coming down so hard, debris and run-off has forced the closure of many roadways and highways on the Big Island. The mayor said the biggest problem right now is rushing rivers. "The biggest focus of problems right now is in the Hilo area," said Mayor Harry Kim. "Many of places are on the threshold of cresting as far as rivers and streams. Visualize water. Water everywhere. Rushing white water in places where there was no water." By 6:30 a.m. some rivers were were already two feet above the normal level. So me drivers who ventured out in the rain were getting stuck in the deep trouble. At least one car on Pauahi street become a bucket of water. Big Island Civil Defense is asking residents to stay home and to not take your cars on the highway. If you have to go out, drive with extreme caution. Some roads including Mauna Kea Access Road will be closed for the entire weekend. |
