Record Amount of Rain in Hilo Damages Homes Print E-mail

Saturday broke a record in Hilo as the most amount of rain to fall in the area in one day since 1969.

All that rain overflowed streams and rivers sending run off and debris into roads.

On Sunday, the mayor reported at least 150 homes have been damaged by the severe flooding.

No matter where you went in Hilo there was rain and the downfall in Waiakea Uka overflowed ditches sending a steady stream of water right into the neighborhood.

It took teamwork, and desperate creativity, to save homes from mass amounts of water.

"It is flooded inside," said Cherise Harada, a Waiakea Uka resident. "So we are scooping water and trying to get it into buckets and pour it into the sink. Hopefully it works."

In Panaewa, firefighters helped one man build a barricade to protect his house from an overflowing stream.

Water in Wainuku was pouring out of Clem Akina Park, flooding the roadway and closing it off to drivers.

One of the tensest moments Saturday was on the edge of Wailuku River. Part of the ground under the Riverside Apartments fell into the water almost triggering Civil Defense to call for an evacuation.

"It was really loud, like thunder at first," said Sarah Derego, a Riverside Apartment resident. "It was like the whole embankment went down and the whole building shook."

Engineers determined the building was safe for residents to stay, but nothing could save homes in Waiakea Uka from flooding, where fire fighters worked in knee deep water.

One resident blamed the flooding on ditch problems above the Waiakea stream.

"And they failed to fix that years ago and this is the third time we are getting flooded," said Resident Jay Enanoria.

"At least this time I got flood insurance. A little bit," said Resident Hebert Nakayama.

The mayor said despite the amount of houses damaged by flooding, only a handful of residents decided to evacuated Saturday night to the Civic Auditorium.

Several roads are still closed in the Hilo district Sunday including Kamehameha Avenue.
