The rushing water covered yards and streets carrying away heavy items like cars. Chanel Adams said she was terrified. "Everything started pushing down the river, cars, washer and dryer, propane tanks...no life, no animals, or people, so we were pretty lucky there. But surf boards, everything flying down the river," said Adams. Someone else's mattress ended up in her yard. The gushing water also shifted a nearby home off its foundation and flattened plants and trees in its path. Due to the rising water and all the debri, a fresh water pipe underneath the Wainiha bridge burst early Sunday morning and that left about 350 homes and businesses with low pressure or no water service at all. And now crews finally completed the repairs. The Civil Defense officials toured the area Monday morning. "So we are asking people to give us any damage assessments, so its doubtful that we'll meet the threshold for FEMA, but we want to quantify that," said Kauai Civil Defense Mark Marshall. |
