Power-lifters. What do you think when you hear that word? Really big guys and bulging muscles? Well, this young lady proves the stereotype just doesn't hold. If you believe, you can achieve. Just ask 13-year-old Angel. "The key to power-lifting, for me, is to have the right frame of mind," she said. "With the frame of mind that you need, your goals will be right in front of you, they're really easy to get if you just have that frame of mind that you know you're going to get it." As you can imagine, it's not an easy thing to do. Angel would spend hours and hours training in the gym to perfect her style and improve her strength. "The hardest part to me is the training. It gets really strenuous at times, but you just got to think you can do it and you have to get over those rough times. And when you do, the joy of getting your lift, is what really makes it all come together," she said. And for Angel, things seem to fall into place. This was her goal back then... "My future goals will probably be to go back to world record breakers next year and break more world records," she said. And that's exactly what happened. Her older self explains, "I returned when I was 15 I did the state record breaking, and I actually took all state records for the squat, the bench and the dead-lift." From there, the rest was history. "I competed in my first fitness show when I was 16. I took second place in that. From that I landed a spot in Muscle Magazine swimsuit edition when I was 16 and that jump-started my whole fitness model career," she says. Five years ago, pregnant with her daughter Aubrey, she put on 60 lbs of baby weight. That's when the opportunity to become a national spokes-model came her way. "I was on contract with Muscle Tech the people that make Hydroxycut and so it was a perfect fit. It was an awesome time in all of our lives. We all did it, my husband got involved. We all dieted together, we trained together," she says. Today she's married and has three kids. She and her husband also own the Aiwohi Brothers Trucking company. So, what's ahead for Angel? "We're jam packed busy with a Monday through Saturday job. And then we have the kids, and our marriage in general. Still doing fitness modeling and hoping to cut another single." That's right, she's also a recording artist. Her single is entitled, "Why do I believe." And, if you talk with Angel you get a sense of "why she believes." The dedication and effort she once put into power-lifting is now spent on more important things. Just ask her daughter Jayna, "She's not a Super Kid anymore, she's super mom." What does Angel think of that? "I'm really happy and really blessed." |
