That's because the city is planning a massive clean up in the area, it says is badly needed. For dozens of homeless families living at Nani Kai Beach, this is home. For Oyate Rising Sun, it's been an ongoing battle. His family was fortunate enough to live in a shelter this year. He's here helping his other family members who weren't that lucky. "Oh, I helping out some family move off to another beach park...I don't know where they're moving but going to another beach park, definitely, just here to help them out," said Rising Sun. On Sunday night, these families will have to pack up their bags and leave. The city is closing Nani Kai and Surfer's Beach Park for about a week to clean and renovate the area. Those living here said they have no where to go. "Hawaii is not for us anymore, just like we are getting pushed out to the beaches...it's our last resort," Rising Sun said. Local resident John Wayte has been living in Maili for 10 years now and has seen Nani Kai transform before his eyes. Wayte said the lack of affordable housing is the root of the homeless problem on the leeward coast. "I think that is where we failed, is the foresight of this high inflation, not being able to afford the homes or the rents. This is what we see, the tents are the results of it," said Wayte. A result of the rising cost of living in Hawaii. "But life is what you make it, yeah...just going through one rough time in my life too, and stay where I'm at...houseless...this is my home...but houseless...can't live here anymore...can not live on the beach anymore," Rising Sun said. At least not this beach said the city. Waianae police will evict anyone still here at 8 a.m. Monday. |
