State lawmakers unveiled a long-range vision for the future on Monday. The Hawaii 2050 sustainability plan took two years to create and involved input from more than 10,000 residents. There are several priority steps for the year 2020. These include increasing affordable housing opportunities, reducing the state's use of fossil fuels and increasing recycling. The plan aims to balance economic, community and environmental goals. "This plan takes those basic needs and the basic protection of the environment and shows how it's tied in to the health and function of our economy, the lifestyles of our people and literally your health and well being," said Mark Fox, The Nature Conservancy. "The bottom line is that the people of Hawaii have spoken and they have said that this is the highest issue for them and the most top of mind issue in terms of thinking about our future," said Sen. Russell Kokubun, Chair Sustainability Task Force. The plan also calls for the creation of a sustainability council made up of a cross-section of the community. Click here for more information. |
