But police say Smith would be the one being looked at by a catamaran worker nearby. "He's familiar with the beach and familiar with beach thefts," says Sgt. Kim Buffett of CrimeStoppers. "He sees Kerrin Smith standing on the beach and he says, you know, she's kind of out of place. Something is not right with her so he keeps an eye on her." The witness told police he got distracted for just a moment and then noticed Smith with two bags now. He followed her and then confronted her. "Her statement to him was, 'Oh I'm just playing a trick on my friends. I'm hiding the bags.' And he's like, 'yeah right,'" Buffett says. Smith would later be arrested on two counts of theft, but she'd never show up for court. Police say Smith is a Caucasian woman about 5-foot-3, 120 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. Authorities believe Smith is still homeless and likely turning to crime to make ends meet. And whether you're a visitor or a local, police say don't leave your bags unattended on the beach. "It's so common that people on the beach think there's so many people on the beach that they're going to watch each other's bags," Buffett said. "You know, people are getting a tan, their eyes are closed. They're not paying attention. They're watching their children. So it's very easy for beach thefts to occur." Kerrin Smith is wanted on a $20,000 felony contempt warrant. She is known to frequent the Waikiki area. Helping police find her could put up to a thousand bucks in your pocket.
